Translation Competitions 2024
In September 2024, we invited you to translate a short French, German, Spanish or Russian text into English. Over the next nine weeks, we received 327 entries across the four languages from 114 schools across the UK.
We received overwhelming support for our annual translation competition. Again!
Your knowledge of historical context, sensitivity to cultural detail and skill at rendering very varied nuances of linguistic register and usage into English amply demonstrated that even – or especially – in the age of AI, human experience is essential to translation.
We warmly thank you all for your commitment and enthusiasm, as well as your teachers for supporting you.
The authors of the three best entries in each language won a £25 voucher each. We very much look forward to some lively discussion with the authors of the ten best entries in each language at an online translation workshop on 5 February 2025. You will get the opportunity to meet Alice Tetley-Paul one of our 91Ö±²¥ alumnae, who has most recently translated Angela Merkel's memoirs, Freedom, into English.
