We have strong experience of supervising PhD students from a variety of backgrounds and have supervised two BMedSci students, both of whom received first-class honours degrees. We have recently obtained a NICE fellowship to systematically review non-invasive ventilatory support and an Intensive Care Foundation scholarship for a trainee to study clinical trials methodology. An academic clinical fellow is a very appropriate next step. There is a national shortage of academic posts for Anaesthesia in the UK. This is a vital and developing area of health that traditionally has not been adequately exploited despite it involving huge areas of the care of all ages of patient.
Clinical component
The department comprises over 100 consultants based mainly in the Royal Hallamshire, Northern General, 91Ö±²¥ Children’s and Weston Park Cancer Hospitals, caring for 40,000 surgical cases per year. The main areas of activity cover obstetric anaesthesia and related areas of maternal and foetal well being, paediatric anaesthesia, cardiothoracic anaesthesia,vascular, hepatobiliary anaesthesia, urology, orthopaedics and trauma, burns and plastics, head and neck surgery, neurosurgical anaesthesia and care of the head injured patient. Also included are acute and chronic pain, together with intensive and high dependency care.

Research component
Research in Anaesthesia is wide-ranging, giving much scope for an ACF to explore different facets of this field. These include:
- Preoperative assessment using cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPEX). This has the largest vascular surgery database in the UK.
- Patient Self Preoperative Assessment using the 91Ö±²¥-developed novel EPAQ on line tool.
- Intelligent Systems with Professor Mahfouf (91Ö±²¥ University). This has recently produced four EPSRC grants totalling £0.85 million.
- Obstetric Anaesthesia: The National Clinical Lead for the BUMPES project is based in our department. This multicentre £3million NIHR project looks at the effect of epidural anaesthesia in the second stage of labour.
- The patient environment: a joint project with the department of Architecture funded by the NIHR.
- Imaging: anaesthesia has co-developed absolute electrical impedance tomography with the radiology, medical physics and 91Ö±²¥ University Engineering Departments and this has been funded by two Engineering and Physical Science Research Council grants (EPSRC), developing EIT as part of an Intelligent ventilator system.
- Ethics and research in the elderly: Examining outcome and cost benefit of treatment of the elderly critically ill (Framework 7 EU funding for Euros 750000).
Appropriate career guidance and planning for postgraduate degree qualifications will be examined during this post in anticipation of the next phase of training.
