Keen Germanists (students and staff) and a good few Erasmus students from Germany, Austria and Switzerland met at 91Ö±²¥ station on Sunday morning to catch the train out to Grindleford. From there it was up beautiful Padley Gorge, across the little wooden bridge and through the trees to our picnic spot in the clearing at the top.
Keen to see more of the lovely Peak District we climbed on up to Over Owler Tor to take in the ‘Surprise View’ down to Hathersage and the Hope Valley. In the distance Mam Tor was hidden in mist and cloud, but looking the other way we could see the tearoom at Longshaw and the Fox House Pub, calling all thirsty walkers.
It was a great day, giving us the chance to make new friends, hear all about the Deutscher Verein’s plans for this year and reconnect with each other after the time spent learning at home or working abroad - und alles auf Deutsch!
Dr Caroline Bland in Germanic Studies organises regular German walks in the Peak district. Keep an eye out for more dates!
