My MSc gave me the confidence to pursue a career in clinical genetics
"After completing my BSc in biomedical science, I started working as a biomedical support worker in a clinical pathology laboratory, where I was able to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for medical diagnosis. After 2 years in this role I realised that I wanted to change the focus of my career to molecular diagnostics using genetic technology, so I applied to the Human and Molecular Genetics MSc course at 91Ö±²¥. This MSc course had all the key elements that I was looking for in a Masters degree: It provided a dedicated experimental module on laboratory techniques in molecular bioscience, as well as an opportunity to apply these techniques to my own research project.
For my independent research I carried out a project focusing on developing a functional genomic assay for individuals affected by a fatty acid metabolism disorder. Through this experience I was able to further advance my transferable skills.

"This particular aspect of the MSc played a major part in building my confidence in carrying out various experimental procedures to standards expected in clinical laboratories. This experience has ultimately helped me secure my current position as MLA. For my independent research I carried out a project focusing on developing a functional genomic assay for individuals affected by a fatty acid metabolism disorder. Through this experience I was able to further advance my transferable skills. Furthermore, the lecture modules complimented my lab work and helped me gain a deeper insight to clinical genetics, as well as recent innovations in the field of stem cell research and molecular genetics.
"After completing the MSc, I secured offers of employment from the NHS as a Genetic Technologist, and from Viapath (private pathology services) as a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA). After careful consideration, I decided to take up the offer from Viapath as I felt it was more in line with the career I wanted to pursue. My role as an MLA requires me to perform various molecular laboratory techniques on clinical samples and implement quality assurance measures. I am also involved in the preventive maintenance and operation of the laboratory instrumentation, processing of clinical samples, undertaking manual procedures, data entry and general clerical and administrative duties.
