Profile

I completed my PhD in the Reproductive Genetics Group at The University of Birmingham where my work involved studying the regulation of mitochondrial DNA replication during early embryogenesis.

After this I spent five years as a postdoctoral researcher at The University of Oxford. I worked in the Human Immunology Unit on the study of HIV-1 envelope gene evolution and the design of an HIV-1 vaccine.

I also worked on a year long project investigating the regulation of iron absorption in HbE beta thalassaemia with specific interest in the peptide hormone hepcidin.

I now draw from my research background when delivering undergraduate teaching in the School of Biosciences (formerly the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology). My role in the school as a dedicated University Teacher involves running laboratory practical sessions, giving lectures, working with tutorial groups and being a year tutor for Level 2 students.

As the departmental disability liaison officer, I play a role in supporting students with disabilities and specific learning difficulties.
