The many loves of Jane Eyre

Studying Jane Eyre, love English Literature, or thinking about studying English at university? This is the session for you. Join Bronte scholar Dr Amber Regis as she explores the presentation of love in Jane Eyre. Alongside the talk, you鈥檒l also have the chance to take part in a Q&A with current Literature students, and find out more about the department.

Jane Eyre is best remembered as a great love story between its heroine 鈥 the 鈥減oor, obscure, plain and little鈥 governess, Jane 鈥 and her rich and powerful employer, Mr Rochester. This is how the book is marketed to readers, and how it鈥檚 sold to audiences across a range of stage and screen adaptations. But love is a complicated thing, and we鈥檒l spend time in this session putting pressure on Bront毛鈥檚 great love story. We鈥檒l pay close attention to the violence, domination and self-sacrifice that accompany expressions of love and desire, and we鈥檒l think about different varieties of love beyond heteronormative romance.

This session is suitable for students in years 12 and 13.
