Vice-President for Education
Mary was appointed Vice-President for Education for the University of 91Ö±²¥ from September 2020 having previously been Interim Deputy Vice-President for Education from August 2019 to August 2020, Chair of the University’s Senate Academic Assurance Committee from 2018 to 2019 and Head of the Department of History from 2011 to 2015.
She has a chair in Modern European History and her main research interests lie in the history of modern Spain, particularly in the period of the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship (1931–75). Her current research interests focus on religious violence in early twentieth-century Spain and she has also published widely in the history of gender.
From 2016 to 2018 Mary held a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship to work on iconoclastic violence in the Spanish Civil War. Her articles on ‘The Martyrdom of Things’ and ‘Church Burning’ have been published in Transactions of the Royal Historical Society (2020) and the Journal of Modern History (2023).
She is a Fellow and former Vice-President of the Royal Historical Society and was a member of the History sub-panel for REF 2021. She chaired the Advisory Council for the Institute of Historical Research from 2019 to 2023 and currently serves on the Research England Advisory Group for the School of Advanced Study. She is on the editorial collective for Gender and History and the editorial boards of Journal of Contemporary History and Historia Contemporánea.
