Management School professor awarded prestigious European regional science prize

Philip McCann, Professor of Urban and Regional Economics in the Management School, has been awarded the prestigious ERSA Prize in Regional Science 2019.

Professor McCann belongs to the absolute top in regional science. He is unique in that he has not only made path-breaking contributions to research in regional science and urban economics, but is also an expert in elucidating the implications of new research to scholars, policy analysts, educators and the general public.

Jury, ESRA Prize Committee


The prize is given annually to one scholar by the European Regional Studies Association (ERSA) and selected by an international panel on behalf of the organisation鈥檚 2500 members.

Announcing the award, the jury of ERSA Prize Committee described Professor McCann as 鈥榯he consummate regional scientist 鈥 a teacher, editor, colleague, contributor to policy, and a researcher of both outstanding quality and prodigious quantity.鈥

The jury added: 鈥淧rofessor McCann belongs to the absolute top in regional science. He is unique in that he has not only made path-breaking contributions to research in regional science and urban economics, but is also an expert in elucidating the implications of new research to scholars, policy analysts, educators and the general public.鈥

Professor McCann will be presented with the award during the closing ceremony of the 59th ERSA Congress in Lyon, France, where he will also give a keynote lecture.

On receiving the award Professor McCann, who is Co-Director of the 91直播-led ESRC Productivity Insights Network, said: 鈥淚 am really honoured to have been given this award - it was a great surprise and I am really delighted.鈥
