I became interested in social research and impacts on health and wellbeing during my ten year career in Public Health departments using strategic approaches in Health Promotion with the NHS.
Before this I worked in chemical and pharmaceutical industries and later with a social enterprise conducting Community Development.
Now, as an academic, I am keen to publish research with practical application for end users and impact for beneficiaries.

Title of PhD: Men鈥檚 Sheds 鈥 How a gendered community intervention can impact health and wellbeing
My research interests are in mental health, emotional health and wellbeing, which link to the social model of health and wider social inequalities. I have conducted research into people seeking support with angry emotions and how holistic approaches can reduce anger, abuse and violence. I am interested in gender equity and health and how men鈥檚 health can be enhanced with benefits for individuals as well as families and communities.
Men鈥檚 Sheds came to my attention in 2007 when I was working as a Health Promotion Specialist. My award winning Masters in Social Research dissertation investigated a Men鈥檚 Shed in the Republic of Ireland. The data suggested that men鈥檚 wellbeing was enhanced by regular participation in their local Men鈥檚 Shed.

For the last six years I have lectured on Public Health topics, such as, Community Health, Psychosocial Context of Health, Professional Practice and Health Communication. I have taught undergraduate levels 4, 5 and 6 as well as postgraduate students on courses such as, MSc in Public Health, MA Social Work, BA Childhood Studies and BSc Dietetics.
