Profile

I am a qualitative research fellow in health services research and joined ScHARR in 2010. I have worked on a number of projects about qualitative research with randomised controlled trials. I am currently working on the STOP-OHSS HTA programme developing a protocol of a new way to treat Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome in women undergoing infertility treatment. Prior to this I worked on two National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) programme grants: a qualitative process evaluation of the Healthlines trial, a telehealth intervention for depression and raised cardiovascular risk; and the ACtiF study, developing and evaluating an intervention to increase nebuliser adherence in adults with Cystic Fibrosis. I also worked on the QUART study looking at the role of qualitative research in randomised controlled trials, funded by the Medical Research Council.

Prior to working at ScHARR, I completed an MSc and PhD in Occupational Psychology at the Institute of Work Psychology and worked on an SDO-funded project looking at the role of culture change in care of older people in acute hospital settings. Before moving to academia, I worked as a financial analyst for Ford Motor Company and Visteon Automotive Ltd (automotive supplier) for a number of years.

Research interests
  • Self-management of long-term conditions such as depression, raised cardiovascular risk, endometriosis, cystic fibrosis
  • Process evaluations of trials using qualitative and mixed methods

  • Qualitative research methods and practice including framework analysis, discourse analysis, rhetorical analysis and the language-in-use approach
  • The role of emotions and identity and in particular language about emotions and identity in organizational and healthcare settings
