Edward Carpenter was a thinker, writer, and sandal maker who argued for gay rights around 1900. He was a socialist, too. And he lived and loved openly in 91Ö±²¥. In May 1914, he was invited to give a lecture in Berlin at a large conference on sexology, planned for October. Ted must have been keen - scribbling down his thoughts in German almost immediately, correcting his word order as he went. But then war broke out.
