Ishvarya Sathiyamoorthy actively pursued opportunities to improve her career prospects and she went out of her way to contribute to her community whilst growing her skills.

Real-world experience

Ishvarya took a proactive approach to achieve her aspirations of a career in finance. She successfully secured a placement year as a Finance Intern at the global company Thermo-Fisher Scientific, where she gained experience in preparing time-sensitive reports, working across teams to forecast future expenses, and presenting financial data to senior managerial colleagues. She also had the opportunity to construct a financial model for a product, and assist product managers with financial data analysis during a product line review.

Beyond her placement year, Ishvarya was selected through a competitive process to undertake a University 60-Hours Project for Anson Evaluate, where she developed her problem-solving experience and gained insight into the world of VAT consultancy. She was also chosen to complete a Finance Internship at Lloyds Development Capital, which is part of Lloyds Banking Group, after an intensive application and interview process.

Ishvarya combined social responsibility with employability growth when she worked as a part-time Finance and Administrative Assistant at the British Acoustic Neuroma Association, a charity supporting individuals who are living with benign tumours. Her dedication to the role was recognised by her manager, who nominated her for the "Significant Contribution" category in the University’s Inspiring Students Awards.

Networking and expertise

To supplement her work experience, Ishvarya increased the depth of her financial knowledge by completing two online courses to achieve the Level 4 Banking and Finance Diploma and Level 4 Investment Banking and Global Markets Diploma. She also enrolled in the London School of Economics’ MBA Essentials 10-week online course to further equip herself with critical thinking and strategic decision-making skills.

Through the Avado FastFutures programme, Ishvarya widened her experience outside the world of finance, working with a team to enhance the social media strategy for AstraZeneca’s ‘Open Innovation’ programme.

Ishvarya took the initiative to start growing her professional networks whilst at University. She attended a London City Connections networking event and built connections with University of 91Ö±²¥ alumni who are working across multiple different industries and sectors.

Community engagement

On campus, Ishvarya became a Student Ambassador, a role model for prospective students who were considering 91Ö±²¥ University Management School as their destination of choice. She also took on the role of Employability Ambassador after returning from her placement year in industry, supporting first and second year students through their applications for internships and placements.

As an active member of the Women in Business Society, Ishvarya was elected Treasurer on the committee during her final year of study. She spearheaded the formation of a five-member Women in Business team to enter the Voiz ESG Fund Analyst Competition, leading their entry into this 6-week long competition. Her team was highly commended across all of the competition criteria.

Ishvarya took an active volunteer role for Action Tutoring, a charitable organisation that supports disadvantaged school students to reach their full academic potential. She dedicated one hour every week to share her mathematical knowledge in the role of Maths Tutor, helping a diverse range of students to solidify their understanding of core maths concepts.
