Dan Brockington is co-Director of Institute for Global Sustainable Development. Trained as an anthropologist in UCL, he has worked at UCL, and the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge and Manchester. Dan specializes in undertaking long-term fieldwork in East Africa, where he lives in remote locations and with rural communities for periods of one to two years. This can be tough work, requiring language training and living without many normal comforts. But it is about as rewarding as it can get. He has been fortunate to undertake three such studies in his career.
Dan’s research also covers many other aspects of development other than rural resource management and livelihood change. His work has covered the social impacts of conservation policy, conservation and data justice, the relationships between capitalism and conservation, the work of media and celebrity in development and large-N studies of NGO sectors. He has conducted most of his research in Tanzania but has also worked in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and India. He has published over 150 works. His books include Fortress Conservation, Celebrity Advocacy and International Development, Celebrity and the Environment, Nature Unbound (with Rosaleen Duffy and Jim Igoe) and he has recently published (with Peter Billie Larson) The Anthropology of Conservation NGOs.
