In anticipation of the Chancellor's Spring Statement, the government's economic update, Dr Gurleen Popli and Professor Jesse Matheson appeared on BBC Breakfast to comment on the plans laid out by Rachel Reeves.

Broadcast live from the Engineering Heartspace at the university, BBC host Ben Boulos asked Dr Popli why it may be important for the Government to stay within their self-imposed financial rules:

鈥淲e need the fiscal rules to create credibility in the market and bring about stability in the economy; for example, we wouldn鈥檛 purchase a house if we didn鈥檛 know whether we would have a job tomorrow.鈥

鈥淭he stability of these rules is what鈥檚 needed for predictability in the economic environment, and that鈥檚 what really fosters growth. Businesses are unlikely to make big investment decisions if they are uncertain about the environment they will be operating in in the near future," Jesse added.

The programme also featured students and apprentices from the university, discussing the impact of higher education and training.
