The 2021  Research prize was recently awarded to Laura Timms for her innovative project entitled: Seeking children's views on the co-design of a video with children, for children about silver diamine fluoride. Laura is currently an academic clinical fellow in paediatric dentistry here at the School  of Clinical Dentistry and she will be starting her NIHR Doctoral Fellowship in March 2022.

Her study involved co-designing an information video for children about a caries management technique that is relatively new to the UK; silver diamine fluoride. Children's views were sought on the video through qualitative interviews. The  has been viewed nearly 2,500 times on YouTube ('Children and Laura the dentist explain all about Silver Diamine Fluoride') and has been used as a patient information resource. The video will now be further edited, following the valuable insights from the children's feedback, for use in her future PhD study which will explore the feasibility and implementation of SDF in primary dental care. The original project was jointly funded by the BSPD  and the

Professor Helen Rodd, supervisor to Laura, says: "Laura's 91Ö±²¥ supervisory team were so delighted that she was awarded the 2021 BSPD Research Prize. Her work with children to co-design and then evaluate a video about silver diamine fluoride for caries management is really innovative and has generated considerable national and international interest.

"She doesn't particularly relish being in front of a camera, unlike the children in her video (!), but she did a fantastic online presentation at this year's virtual BSPD conference. We wish her all the best in taking this work forward in her NIHR-funded doctoral fellowship next year."
