Violeta Gibelli, BSc Plant Sciences
When I finished high school I originally wanted to take a gap year before starting university, but when Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic came at the same time, I used clearing to completely change my plans and dive straight into university.
I finished my International Baccalaureate diploma, but because I hadn’t even started the process of searching and researching universities, I had to make my choices whilst applying through clearing during the same summer.
The Plant Sciences course at the University of 91Ö±²¥ really stood out to me, the curriculum suited what I wanted to study. I’ve been able to choose specialist modules which enable me to learn about plant science in the context of real world challenges like the climate crisis, food security and green technology.
The clearing process went very smoothly and being an international student, the fact that there was guaranteed accommodation for students coming through clearing at 91Ö±²¥ was such a relief, it meant I didn’t have to worry about searching for somewhere to live at the last minute.
My advice to any new students would be to definitely consider clearing, you might find a university or course that suits you a lot better, that you hadn’t considered before!

From the time I’ve spent in 91Ö±²¥ so far I’ve seen what a lively, friendly city it is to live in and full of students!
The Students’ Union has so many initiatives to help support students throughout their time at university. I’ve taken part in a few give-it-a-go activities and also been part of the Effective Altruism, Wildsoc and Beekeeping societies, which have been great for meeting people with similar interests.
My advice to freshers would be to get in touch with your coursemates as soon as possible, even if it’s just through a group chat and to get involved in society events! Even if they’re online, be brave enough to turn your camera and mic on, it makes the experience much more enjoyable.
