Do you work in cancer research at the University of 91Ö±²¥? Or, are you a University of 91Ö±²¥ researcher and interested in meeting others in the field?
Join us to build an interdisciplinary cancer research community at 91Ö±²¥ to deliver the university’s cancer research strategy.  Last year, colleagues from over 20 departments registered from across all faculties of the university. 

  • Guest speaker: Professor Karen Lowton (University of Sussex): How can social science inform improvements for patients and services? 
  • Hear from the successful recipients of the Yorkshire Cancer Research ringfenced funding (91Ö±²¥ Pioneers and More Life to Live funds) fund about the work they have planned, including:
    • development of a human pluripotent stem cell-based platform for dissecting tumour initiation (Anestis Tsakiridis, Biosciences)
    • managing immunotherapy through a new digital care pathway E-IMMUNE (Janet Brown & Syed Hussain, Clinical Medicine)
    • electrical impedance spectroscopy and machine learning-based system for early diagnosis of oral cancer (Dawn Walker, Computer Science)
    • improving outcomes for premenopausal with triple negative breast cancer; effects of bisphosphonates and immune checkpoint inhibitors (Penny Ottewell, Clinical Medicine)
    • developing a new screening platform for compounds targeting metastatic cancer (Kyra Campbell, Biosciences)
    • ex-vivo determined cancer therapy clinical validation - EVIDENT (Greg Wells & Sarah Danson, Clinical Medicine)
  • Contribute to theme-based breakout sessions covering the themes of the cancer research strategy:
    • Cancer prevention and early diagnosis – facilitated by Caroline Mitchell 
    • Digital health, big data, advanced diagnostic technologies and rethinking the delivery of cancer care – facilitated by Jim Catto
    • Translational and precision cancer medicine – facilitated by Munitta Muthana
    • Improving the outcomes for cancer patients – facilitated by Ingunn Holen & Sarah Danson
    • Enhancing patient experience and voice – facilitated by Catriona Mayland & Stefania Vicari
  • Speaker: Embedding sustainability in research (Rachael Rothman)
  • Speaker: Prof Tim Craggs, Departmental Director of Research and Innovation, Dept of Chemistry - talk title tbc
  • Other breakout sessions to include:
    • Cancer vaccines - Sarah Danson & Munitta Muthana.  Sarah is Co-Clinical Lead for the National Cancer Vaccine Programme.
    • The application of bioinformatics to cancer research - Mark Dunning
  • Opportunities for networking and meeting others from across the university.

You are welcome to join as a University of 91Ö±²¥ staff member, honorary member of staff, PhD student or NHS-based member of staff in 91Ö±²¥ with an interest in cancer research at the university, as well as those who support cancer researchers at the university or within the NHS.  If you are based in another university and collaborate with colleagues here at 91Ö±²¥, you are also welcome to join.
