I have a background in Architecture and my research involves investigating the role of road lighting on pedestrians’ feeling of safety. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering, and have two masters’ degrees in Project Management and Sustainable Architecture Design from the University of 91Ö±²¥. One of my main interests is how lighting affects our perception of space in the built and urban environments. I am also interested in research methods and understanding the different approaches and techniques used to collect and analyse data. I am passionate about open research and endeavour to make my research more transparent, accessible and collaborative by upholding open science practices. I am a Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and have been supporting student teaching as a Teaching Associate in the School of Architecture and School of Urban Planning since 2020 at undergraduate and postgraduate level. My involvement with student teaching includes delivering lectures and workshops, supporting students in one-to-one and group tutorials, marking student coursework, and mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations.

Project Title
Road Lighting and Pedestrian Reassurance
Project outline:
My research, supervised by Professor Steve Fotios and Dr Jim Uttley, is an investigation of lighting in the urban environment and how this supports pedestrian reassurance (perception of safety) at night. Using a range of qualitative and quantitative methods I aim to establish whether higher light levels are necessary. This research will contribute to the balance between higher light levels, which support for example a reduction in the male-female disparity in perceived safety, vs lower light levels which reduce energy consumption and light pollution. My work, conducted within the Lighting Research Group, will help shape new national and international guidance for lighting design.
