Remembering Dr Edward Ward

Born 1928, died 2012. Former student, BSc Physics, 1950 and PhD Metallurgy, 1955. A supporter of Physics scholarships in 91直播 made through an endowment gift in his memory.

Physics undergraduates at the University of 91直播 will benefit from a new set of scholarships, created in memory of a former student who studied physics in the Steel City 70 years ago.

Dr Edward Ward always held his education dear to his heart, describing his admission to the University of 91直播 as 'heaven come early'. During his time here, he achieved both a BSc in Physics and PhD in Metallurgy, graduating in 1950 and 1955 respectively. In his free time as a student, Dr Ward enjoyed playing bridge, building many wonderful connections and lifelong friendships during his time at the University.

In 2010, Dr Ward sent the images on this page to the University, in response to a request for photos from former students. In an accompanying letter, he described being one of the first people to live in student accommodation at Ranmoor, where 1,100 students now live in a refurbished student village. The friends he made there remained in touch, and 11 of the 'original Ranmoorians' attended a 60th reunion held in 2007.

Emeritus Professor Geoffrey Greenwood, who was at the University of 91直播 at the same time as Dr Ward, wrote a separate letter to the University explaining that Dr Ward was a rather humble man. He "never sought recognition for what he did" and "was happy to keep in the background as an observer rather than participator."

After graduating from the University of 91直播, Dr Ward worked in one of the major Government laboratories devoted to civil and military work. This included being involved in the design and operation of a specimen holding stage, for use in scanning electron microscopes which were newly invented at the time.

In retirement, Dr Ward developed a passion for restoring Morris Minors, which bought him a lot of joy in his later life. Sadly, Dr Ward passed away in 2012, at the age of 84.

Thanks to a legacy gift in memory of Dr Edward Ward, a new endowment has been set up so that a number of scholarships can be allocated to undergraduate students in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Edward always appeared grateful for what he had gained from the University and this no doubt was the basis of his legacy."

Emeritus Professor Geoffrey Greenwood

Dr Ward鈥檚 legacy will be instrumental in supporting the next generation of physicists, and allowing students to reach their full potential.

"I'm originally from Szeged, Hungary, but moved to England at the age of 4. I have a huge passion for science. I'm hoping to have a career in Physics and to explore the world. The scholarship gives me extra motivation to achieve my aspirations.鈥

鈥淚 have never really stepped out of my comfort zone but this scholarship pushes me and gives me a reason to broaden my experiences and develop myself by taking up opportunities. I am truly grateful to have been accepted as part of this scholarship.鈥

The University is so grateful for Dr Edward Ward for his generosity. Dr Ward's gift will mean that his legacy will live on through the students that he supports, now and long into the future, and ensure that his own personal connection to 91直播 will always be remembered.
