Why did you decide to apply for this apprenticeship?

鈥淚 applied for the apprenticeship programme because I felt ready to further pursue my career within speech and language therapy. I had worked for the NHS for over 22 years prior to starting the apprenticeship, and the skills gained over these years within a hospital setting helped me understand the skills and qualities needed to become an NHS worker. In addition, observing the role of a speech and language therapist in the hospital environment influenced me greatly in the decision to take this next step in my career.鈥

What are the biggest benefits of an apprenticeship compared to other routes into this career pathway?

鈥淎s a mature student having financial responsibilities has always been a barrier to continuing further education. The apprenticeship route offers the safety net of reducing any financial difficulties and once completed, guarantees a qualified position. In addition I get to continue to work and grow within an amazing, supportive team, with the added benefit of frequent tripartite meetings and one-to-ones with university and practice mentors.鈥

What is one of the most rewarding aspects of being an apprentice?

鈥淭he most rewarding aspect of being an apprentice is being provided with the academic tools and knowledge to really help people with speech and swallowing difficulties.

The care, support and advice that I have been able to offer has been invaluable to the quality of people's lives. Making a difference to someone's quality of life and overall patient experience means a lot to me.

What is one of the biggest challenges you have faced, and how have you overcome this?

鈥淭he main challenge I have faced within this apprenticeship was becoming aware that my learning skills are not what they used to be. Getting older has definitely impacted my ability to learn and retain new information. I have seen a significant difference in my ability to take on new information  in this degree in comparison to my last degree, which I completed in 2006. This challenge has meant that I have to work harder to make sure I continue to maintain a high level of understanding and continue to develop skills.鈥

How is this apprenticeship helping you to develop personally and professionally?

鈥淭his apprenticeship has helped me develop academically, professionally and personally. I've gained new skills in time management, as well as reading and interpreting research and complex information. As the programme has progressed I鈥檝e been able to apply my new academic knowledge and skills, and have been given more responsibility and complex patients to support as a result. I also feel that I have developed my interpersonal skills and communication skills.鈥

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

鈥淕o for it! It's an amazing route to complete a degree in something you love. Just be honest with yourself and make sure you are 110% committed throughout the degree. Prepare yourself for hard work, dedication and strive for success as it's not for the faint of heart.

鈥淚n addition, make sure you have all the information requested by the university, including exam certificates. This will save you stress and time during the application process!鈥
